We made a last-minute decision to drive to Kansas for the 4th of July holiday weekend, and it was awesome. I always joke that there is nothing to do in Independence Kansas, but really that didn't matter, because there's family there.
We played baseball in the front yard. Best part: getting slammed to the ground by Ethan (twice!) as he slid into home base. I was the unfortunate catcher.

The little girls hit a few times, with our help, but they mostly liked fielding the ball.

We did a LOT of swimming. We thought we'd escape some of the miserable west Texas heat, but nope... it was still in the 100's. We were always in the pool. Lydia is officially a
swimmer now - no armbands or floats required - and she was a little fish who wanted to swim every day as soon as she got up.

Claire just perfected her lazy backstroke.

And Scarlett had her fair share of pooltime too.

This is Brody-bear, who is a year older than Scarlett. Brody recently broke his leg when he slipped and fell on the pool deck.

SO then Papa Jon went and bought a bunch of rugs to cover the pool deck. The kids had to wear swimshoes
and walk on the rugs so they wouldn't slip :)

We got to enjoy visiting with all the family, and the great-grandparents. We went out to the farm to check in on grandma & grandpa Wright. Grandpa Wes had a bad stroke and his health has been horrible for the past 10 years, he's barely mobile and has lost his strength, but when Claire went up to him and held up her arms for a goodbye hug, he bent over and tried with all his might to lift her... and he did! I'll never forget that.
There are 9 Viets grandkids, 6 of them girls, and a lot of curly-haired ones. Its obvious where Lydia's locks come from. But her curls have
nothin on Savannah's.

The girls had a lunch picnic by the pool.

And all the kids enjoyed the raft island.

Mimi made cupcakes for everyone to celebrate Claire's birthday

Then when the 4th came around, we played with fireworks. The sparklers were a little weak, but Lydia enjoyed them. Claire, however, would hold one for about 3 seconds and then throw it on the ground. They both like the poppers the best.

Ethan (and Josh) just liked the ones that made a lot of noise.

Then of course Josh wanted to get the girls involved in the fireworks more, so he had Lydia light a few
by herself. Not sure if this is a good thing to teach a preschooler. But it was fun.

The craziest moment.... when the guys set off a rocket into the sky that flew over the house and ended up landing on the chair beside the pool. We all assumed it was in the grass somewhere, but then Mimi looked out her back window and the chair was
smoking. It had burned the seat!
What a crazy (and sometimes stupid/dangerous) holiday. But for weeks the girls have been talking about the fireworks. We all had a good time.
